BTS’s Suga Receives Harsh Backlash Following First Update in Two Years

BTS’s Suga faces backlash over huge donation amid drunk driving controversy. BTS’s Suga sparked major shock on September 22 with his first Instagram post in over two years. His last post was in August 2023, just before he enlisted.
The post featured a photo from a few months ago, announcing Suga’s role in establishing the Min Yoongi Treatment Center at Severance Hospital in Seoul. He also made a massive ₩5.00 billion KRW (about $3.60 million USD) donation.
This donation is reportedly the largest ever made by an individual in Korean entertainment history.
The controversy began as some netizens questioned the sincerity of the donation, linking it to Suga’s recent drunk driving incident involving an electric scooter. They claimed the donation was a public relations move to improve his image.
“A drunk driver is literally a potential murderer.”
“Just hurry up and leave [the group].”
“Leave together with Jimin, hand in hand.”
“If he had retired and donated 5 billion won, at least that would’ve seemed sincere. But this just feels like a ploy for forgiveness.”

As the situation unfolded, many fans jumped to Suga’s defense:
“I mean, even people who got caught 2–3 times are still filming movies and promoting just fine. So I don’t really see donating as a bad thing.”
“What matters is reflecting on your wrongs, not people blindly yelling at him to retire. Whatever the intention, he did donate… And honestly, it’s a fact that Suga contributes more to society than haters do.”
“A ₩5.00 billion KRW (about $3.60 million USD)… wow.”

The backlash is ongoing, but support for Suga’s charitable efforts remains strong among many ARMYs and netizens.
