ASTRO’s Cha Eunwoo May Win Tax Evasion Case Yet Face Overall Defeat
Cha Eunwoo is facing a massive tax evasion suspicion worth ₩20 billion KRW (about $13.8 million USD).
The controversy began when the National Tax Service claimed Cha Eunwoo’s income structure was abnormal. They suspect his mother’s company, Company A, is a “paper company” set up without real business activities. The tax office is investigating how Company A and Cha Eunwoo’s agency Fantagio handled contracts and profit distribution.
Cha Eunwoo has hired Sejong, one of Korea’s top law firms, preparing for a legal showdown with the tax service. Legal experts think Cha Eunwoo might have a chance if it goes to court.
Lawyer Lee Tae Ho from Roel Law Firm posted a video explaining the situation:
“Sometimes the National Tax Service interprets laws in favor of the state and imposes excessive taxes.”
“They first impose heavy additional taxes and then dispute the matter in court afterward.”
“Recently, large law firms have often won lawsuits against the National Tax Service.”
“Since the possibility of excessive taxation by the tax authorities cannot be ruled out, we must watch the outcome until the very end.”
But Lee also warned about damage to Cha Eunwoo’s public image:
“Most entertainers reach a settlement with the tax authorities at a certain level and close the case.”
“In Cha Eunwoo’s case, it seems that the National Tax Service pressured him, but since he refused to sign, they imposed the additional tax.”
“Even if he wins the tax lawsuit later, the public will only remember that he evaded taxes.”
“This issue will continue even after his military discharge.”
Cha Eunwoo issued an official apology on the 26th:
“I sincerely apologize for causing concern and disappointment due to recent matters related to me.”
“As a citizen of Korea, I am deeply reflecting on whether my attitude toward my tax obligations was lacking.”
The investigation is ongoing as Cha Eunwoo and his team prepare for a tough battle ahead.
