Leading Actor Referred to Prosecution on Rape Allegations

Nam Kyung Ju is facing a sexual assault investigation.

On March 11, MBN reported the top musical actor was handed over to prosecutors. Seoul Bangbae Police sent Nam Kyung Ju to Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office last month. The charge: rape by force.

The alleged incident happened in Seoul last year. The victim, identified only as “A,” fled the scene and later reported it to police.

Nam Kyung Ju denies the allegations. He says there was no rape. But police secured physical evidence supporting the victim’s testimony. The evidence backed up that the crime happened. That’s why the case was sent to prosecution.

“The investigation was still in process and declined to comment on any specific details,” Nam Kyung Ju told Dispatch.

His social media account was closed the same day the report went public. Before that, he communicated frequently with fans. This news shocked the public and performing arts community.

Nam Kyung Ju debuted in 1984 with the musical Porgy and Bess. He’s known for roles in Les Misérables, Rent, Mamma Mia, Wicked, and Annie.

He also works as an associate professor in Performing Arts at Hongsik University.
