Famous Actor Cries While Sharing Son’s Traumatic School Violence Experience; Bullies Remained Unpunished

Kwon Oh Joong hit hard after revealing his son’s brutal school bullying case.

The controversy started when the actor appeared on KBS 1TV’s Hwang Shin Hye’s Let’s Live Together on April 29, KST. He shared that his son, Hyuk Jun, faced violence at school for a whole year because of a rare genetic disease causing muscle atrophy and developmental disabilities. Hyuk Jun is reportedly the first such case in Korea and one of only ten worldwide. The disease doesn’t even have a name yet.

Hyuk Jun struggled to make friends due to his physical condition. Kwon said he didn’t blame classmates at first, thinking children just couldn’t connect with him. But then a group of students started physically assaulting Hyuk Jun.

The actor explained that in middle school, his son refused to go to school, saying he was punched in the stomach. When Kwon confronted the alleged attacker, the student denied it and said he was actually a friend.

Kwon trusted the explanation and scolded his son, but soon got a call from the school that Hyuk Jun needed emergency care. He rushed to find his son badly injured with multiple stitches and a bleeding neck.

“My son had been bullied by five students for a whole year,” Kwon said.

The bullies hid behind fake friendliness but beat Hyuk Jun regularly. They punched his stomach, hit him with sticks, and forced him to crawl to the bathroom. The same student who denied bullying was among them.

Injured Hyuk Jun

Kwon revealed Hyuk Jun’s neck wound was from glass shards after someone punched him near a window, breaking it. Police had to step in before the students finally confessed.

Police involvement

The main perpetrator was transferred to another school, while the others just changed classes. Kwon pointed out that voluntary transfers erase school violence records, letting main offenders dodge consequences.

Bullies punished lightly

After all this, Hyuk Jun got shunned by classmates again. Kwon said he only felt relief after his son finished school and broke down sharing the toll this took on the family.

“School violence doesn’t just break the child, but the parents as well,” Kwon said tearfully.
“I only wish for my son to live a normal life like everyone else.”
