Actor Speaks Out About Starring in Controversial K-Drama Adaptation Following Cancellation of Original Webtoon in US

Kim Mu Yeol is facing controversy over his new role in Netflix’s upcoming series Teach You A Lesson (also known as Get Schooled).
The series is adapted from a popular webtoon that sparked major backlash for alleged sexism and racism. The outrage was serious enough to end its run in the US.
A production presentation for the show took place on June 5, 2026 (KST). Kim Mu Yeol joined co-stars Lee Sung Min, Jin Ki Joo, and P.O, along with director Hong Jong Chan.
The lead role of Na Hwa Jin was first offered to Kim Nam Gil. He declined after the controversy around the webtoon resurfaced.
Kim Mu Yeol said he took the role because he trusted director Hong Jong Chan from their past project, Juvenile Justice, which tackled tough themes carefully.
“Because of that, I had trust in him and decided to work on this project as well. As expected, it was a very satisfying experience.
There are always various things that happen during the casting process whenever a project is being made. It’s something we all know among ourselves, but I think what’s different this time is that many people came to know about it.

Director Hong commented on the controversy:
“We fully understand the concerns about the original work. With a refined perspective, the production team worked very carefully and made great efforts to create a good story.”

Kim Mu Yeol hopes fans will judge his performance on the project rather than the webtoon’s past.
“I hope viewers watch and judge how well I was able to sublimate that pressure into my acting. Ultimately, I believe actors are people who speak through their projects. I hope people watch this series and recognize my sincerity through the work.”
