Netflix’s “Teach You A Lesson” Draws Strong Backlash for Misogynistic Content

Jin Ki Joo is facing backlash over a controversial scene in Netflix’s new drama Teach You A Lesson.
The controversy began after viewers shared screenshots of a line where Jin Ki Joo’s character sarcastically says, “none of them need breast reduction surgery,” aiming at her female students.
The scene shows a student asking if the teacher had surgery before. Jin Ki Joo’s character replies:
“Yeah, I got surgery. Breast reduction surgery. But it doesn’t seem like anyone in this class needs it, so I won’t be accepting further questions.”
Soon after, netizens flooded Korean online communities with criticism. Many called the dialogue “old-fashioned” and said the script “reeks of hannam” (a derogatory term for misogynistic Korean men).
Some comments from netizens on theqoo included:
- “Honestly, they just threw together a bunch of dopamine inducing scenes, so I get why it’s popular, but I can’t say that the drama is good content.”
- “The script is atypical to those written by a hannam (derogatory term for misogynistic Korean men). You can’t hide how vulgar it is.”
- “If you can’t see how problematic it is by watching it, then you’re the problem… to the point where you have to reflect on yourself.”
- “Girls would never say that, ever.”
- “What are those who are bashing the drama just cuz of this one scene about boobs on female communities?”

Not everyone agreed with the backlash. Some viewers said the critics were overreacting and that discussing breast reduction surgery is not automatically wrong.
As the situation unfolds, the scene remains one of the most talked-about moments from the drama’s recent release.
