Acclaimed Director Uhm Tae-hwa Commends BTS V’s Acting and Expresses Desire for Future Collaboration
On June 6, Uhm Taehwa, the Best Director winner for Concrete Utopia, shared his experience working with Kim Taehyung, better known as V of BTS. The interview took place at the Muju Film Festival with Editor-in-Chief Joo Sung-chul. The talk focused on their collaboration for IU’s music video Love Wins All, which stands out as a brief but meaningful project for both.
Filming the music video was surprisingly quick—just two days. Taehyung tackled the shoot right before his military enlistment, even cutting his hair immediately after and leaving the very next day. Uhm Taehwa mentioned the effort it took for V to be part of the project despite his tight schedule, showing how passionate he was about the acting role. The director was impressed enough to openly say he hopes to work with Taehyung again in the future.
"Yes, I know." Uhm answered when asked if he was aware V’s military discharge was coming up on June 10th. After Joo Sung-chul brought up how popular the music video has been, with views reaching hundreds of thousands, he asked if Uhm had congratulated him.
"I sent him a message." Uhm confirmed, and he then explained the actor’s dedication on set:
"For me, if Taehyung were willing to do it, I’d be so grateful. I’d love to work with him—even if I had to make up a role just to ask him. And on set, we had fun working together. We only filmed for two days, and I think he enlisted about two days after that. He filmed with us almost right before enlisting—cut his hair right after filming, and then left the next day, I think. That’s how much he wanted to do it. He was very passionate about it. That’s when I realized he had a real desire to act. And honestly, I’m not joking—it would be amazing if we could work together again in the future." Uhm Taehwa
One memorable moment that highlights Taehyung’s quick thinking came during what was meant to be the final scene. Originally, the plan was for a dramatic crowd-surfing scene, with the characters singing while dressed in wedding gowns. With the tight two-day schedule, however, that idea risked delaying the entire shoot—and the people involved were visibly stressed.
"Uh… thinking" Uhm Taehwa paused when asked for a story.
Joo Sung-chul then reminded him it was only two days on set. Uhm went on to explain:
"Originally—well, in the final scene, they sing while wearing the wedding dress. There was a part where they were supposed to be up on stage, singing, and the two of them were going to dive into the audience and crowd surf. But since we only had two days, we really didn’t have enough time."
As director, Uhm really wanted to get that scene right, believing it would add emotional depth. But V convinced him to drop it:
"So I kept trying to make it work until the very end—but then Taehyung convinced me. He said, ‘Instead of this, how about we film another scene better?’"
Turns out, that was the smart call. Sticking with the original plan would’ve eaten up too much time, letting other key scenes slip. The extra pressure was clear on the audience actors, too. But when Taehyung announced he scrapped the scene to everyone’s relief, cheers broke out.
"So Taehyung talked me out of it and then turned to the audience actors and said, ‘Everyone, I got rid of that scene!’ I remember everyone got so happy and cheered out loud." Uhm Taehwa
Though it was a short shoot, the experience left a strong impression on Uhm and fans alike. With Taehyung’s return from military service set for June 10, anticipation is growing for his next steps as an actor in film or TV.
