BTS Faces Criticism for “Uncreative” and “Unprogressive” Albums from Industry Experts

BTS is facing backlash over their latest album packaging.

The controversy began when BTS opened pre-orders on March 17 for their 5th full-length album ARIRANG via fan platform Weverse. Fans quickly reacted after the album details were revealed, expressing disappointment online.

The standard photobook version, priced at ₩21,900 KRW (about $14.70 USD), features a minimalist white-toned design. It includes a photobook, CD, film photo, lyric paper, and photocard holder — a package many called a “basic formula.”

This isn’t respectful to fans who have waited so long,
It feels low effort compared to recent albums,
There’s no real concept here

These comments spread widely across online communities. Other editions, like the Living Legend version, reportedly offer little variation, adding to fan frustration.

Similar criticism has followed BTS’s past releases, including Proof and Butter. Industry watchers say this backlash reflects growing fatigue rather than a one-time reaction.

By contrast, veteran group EXO recently released their 8th album REVERXE with a Tamagotchi-style smart album that included a short story expanding their fictional universe. This added interactivity and narrative depth, raising the bar for album creativity.

At the same time, BLACKPINK’s recent mini album DEADLINE also kept things simple, focusing on photos, posters, and photocards. Some argue top-tier K-pop acts are stepping back from the merch-heavy album trend.

However, fans no longer see simplicity as sophistication. Instead, many interpret minimal packaging as complacency.

They’re putting in the bare minimum because it will sell anyway.

Today’s K-pop fans expect more than just music. Albums are now interactive, collectible experiences. Repeating the same formula risks deepening fan fatigue and dissatisfaction.
