BTS RM’s Unexpectedly Honest Livestream Sparks Wave of Calls for Group Disbandment

BTS’s RM is facing backlash after dropping a bomb about disbandment during his December 7, 2025, Weverse livestream (KST).
RM said the group thought about disbanding “tens of thousands of times” while planning for their comeback.
“Would it be better to just disband? For example… Like, wouldn’t it be better to stop group activities? That crossed our minds tens of thousands of times.”

He reassured fans the group stayed together because of their love for BTS and their fans, but Korean fans didn’t take it well.
A viral theqoo post titled “BTS’s RM Mentions Disbandment During Today’s Livestream” exploded with over 1.1K comments accusing him of being “thoughtless” and “gaslighting.” Some fans even told BTS to just disband already.

Fan reactions included:
“His comment is basically an unspoken pressure or warning… Like saying, ‘This is how seriously I’m thinking about things, so stop it already.’ That is literally gaslighting. Why would you say that to fans??? If you want to do it, just do it.”
“What is this, like a kid threatening their mom, ‘If you keep nagging, I won’t go to college’?? It sounds like a threat.”
“Talking about a team disbanding should be as serious as talking about divorce in a marriage…”
“He’s really being reckless LOL. Just disband already. The only reason ARMY still functions is because the fandom has already split into individual-member fandoms. The thing I want most is for BTS to disband.”
“He really comes off like someone who guilt-trips.”

Other fans said:
“Hearing a currently active idol talk about disbandment at all is shocking… why keep bringing it up?”
“I mean, go ahead, then.”
“Didn’t he mention disbandment around the time they renewed their contracts, too? Back then I thought it was even more random, bringing it up when they were at the top.”
“He’s really making his fans feel awful.”
The comments show fans feel like the disbandment talk is a guilt trip or threat. They’re tired of the emotional narrative.

More fan backlash includes:
“Hearing a member say the word ‘disband’ feels like a threat.”
“I’ve never seen an idol casually bring up disbandment like this… not even through an official statement from the company.”
“What he wants to say is obvious, but he keeps circling around it. In the end, isn’t he basically saying they want to be able to date, party, and live like non-celebrities so they can grow or whatever? He danced around it, but that’s the gist.”
“‘Disbandment gaslighting’ at its peak. Now whatever happens from here on out will be blamed on the fans.”

Even more:
“They’ve already lost their rookie mindsets ages ago. Might as well just disband LOL.”
“Do it LOL.”
“Gaslighting fans into staying in the fandom doesn’t work anymore. The whole scene has really changed. K-Pop fans in general are just that exhausted.”
RM’s point was to show BTS’s strength through hard times. The group stayed together despite thinking about calling it quits.
Unfortunately, fans say his comments missed the mark. They see it as a threat or pressure, not honesty.
