Cyberwrecker Sojang Appeals Court Decision Following Starship Entertainment’s Legal Victory
Starship Entertainment recently secured a legal win against the operator behind the notorious YouTube channel ‘Sojang,’ which had gained attention for spreading false rumors about celebrities. The Seoul Central District Court ruled on June 4 that the channel’s operator must pay Starship 50 million KRW (about 36,500 USD), a portion of the original 100 million KRW (around 73,000 USD) claim. However, the operator has appealed the decision as of June 18.
The channel ‘Sojang’ was active between October 2021 and June 2023, targeting several well-known K-pop figures including IVE’s Jang Won Young, BTS, EXO, aespa, and Kang Daniel. It allegedly earned roughly 250 million KRW (approximately 180,000 USD) through videos filled with false information aimed at damaging these artists’ reputations.
It’s not just a civil case—Jang Won Young and Starship pushed for criminal charges as well. In that trial, the court handed down a two-year prison sentence for Sojang’s operator, suspended for three years. Prosecutors weren’t satisfied and have filed their own appeal. In a related civil suit, Jang Won Young won a partial victory, with the court ordering Sojang to pay her 50 million KRW (36,500 USD).
Meanwhile, Sojang is still facing other lawsuits from BTS, EXO, aespa, and Kang Daniel, reflecting the widespread impact of the channel’s misinformation.
The latest developments show the ongoing battle against harmful online content targeting K-pop stars, with Starship and its artists pushing hard for accountability.
