Sasaeng Fan Convicted of Trespassing and Stealing from NewJeans’ Dormitory
A sasaeng fan who broke into NewJeans’ dorm and took some personal belongings has been handed a prison sentence. The incident happened last December at the group’s residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, after NewJeans had already moved out following their contract termination with ADOR earlier that month.
The Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 9, led by Judge Kim Min Jeong, held the trial on June 11th for the accused, known as Defendant A. Prosecutors asked for a 10-month prison term on charges of trespassing and theft.
According to the court, A first noticed the dorm door was open on December 18th, but instead of leaving, they came back a few days later. On December 21st, A entered the empty residence again and stole several items, including a clothes hanger and a banner. They also recorded video footage inside the dorm and shared it online.
During the trial, A’s lawyer admitted to all the charges but asked for leniency. The defense argued that the defendant regrets their actions and has been cooperative throughout the investigation. The lawyer also pointed out this was A’s first offense and claimed that the risk of reoffending is low. They insisted,
"Given their usual conduct, the risk of reoffending is low. They did not believe taking the items after the group had moved out would constitute theft."
A showed remorse during the hearing as well, reading from a prepared statement while visibly emotional:
"I made a terrible mistake due to a reckless decision. I deeply apologize to the artist I admired and to the agency for causing pain,"
they said tearfully.
They added that they have been reflecting daily through letters and asked for a chance to move forward with their life goals:
"Please give me a chance to pursue my dream of becoming a civil servant. I will live responsibly while taking care of my ailing mother."
A’s mother was present in court and was seen crying during the proceedings.
This case highlights the serious consequences sasaeng behavior can bring, especially when fans cross legal boundaries by invading idols’ private spaces and taking personal property.
