Supreme Court Issues Ruling on Oh Yeong Su’s Sexual Misconduct Case in “Squid Game”

Oh Yeong Su cleared by Supreme Court in sexual assault case

Actor Oh Yeong Su was officially acquitted by the Supreme Court’s 3rd Division on March 25. The court upheld the appellate court’s decision to overturn his earlier conviction.

The controversy began with charges against Oh Yeong Su for allegedly forcibly touching a junior female colleague, identified as Ms. A, twice in 2017. The incidents reportedly happened in Daegu during a theater performance stay: once a hug on a walking trail in August, and once a kiss on the cheek in front of her residence in September.

Oh Yeong Su denied all allegations from the start.

The first trial ruled against him, sentencing him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, plus 40 hours of sexual violence treatment. The court said:

“The victim’s statements were consistent and credible, unlikely to be fabricated without experience”

Both the prosecution and Oh Yeong Su’s defense appealed the verdict.

At the appeal, the court reversed the original judgment and acquitted him. Their reasoning was:

“It is difficult to exclude the possibility that parts of the testimony were distorted over time, and when there is doubt whether the defendant committed the assault, the judgment must be made in favor of the defendant.”

Oh Yeong Su is best known internationally for his role in the 2021 Netflix hit Squid Game. He won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 79th Golden Globe Awards in January 2022.

The legal closure puts an end, for now, to the high-profile case involving the award-winning actor.
