Well-Known American Singer Faces Backlash Over Comments On NJZ’s (NewJeans) Lawsuit Decision

NewJeans is facing major drama after a Seoul court ruled in favor of ADOR’s contract with the group’s five members.

On October 30 KST, Judge Jeong Hoe Il confirmed the agency’s contract validity in ADOR’s lawsuit against NewJeans, who had announced plans in November 2024 to terminate their contracts, saying trust was broken. The group declared themselves free and even changed their name amid the dispute.

Many fans and observers saw NewJeans’ move as a fight for control over their careers against harsh agency conditions. The group called out ADOR’s management and demanded the restoration of former creative director Min Hee Jin’s system.

Supporting NewJeans publicly is American pop star Kesha, who has her own history with a legal fight against controlling contracts. Back in 2014, Kesha sued producer Dr. Luke, accusing him of drugging and abusing her while controlling her career. Her case dragged on until a 2023 settlement, despite allegations being denied by Dr. Luke.

After the NJZ ruling, Kesha tweeted her support for the group:

My heart is with you NewJeans

Kesha’s tweet sparked backlash. Critics accused NewJeans of backing a company linked to a “sexual assault apologist” and “pedophile,” referencing Min Hee Jin controversies.

The concept of your heart being with a group who’s fighting in court to bring back a sxual assault apologist and pdophile into their company https://t.co/aD6wVpwtF2 https://t.co/pV57TkMzvp

thank you kesha for siding with artists who practically ruined their career for a pedophile CEO, thank you for supporting artists who publicly bullied a second group of young girls for more than a year, you’re far too kind @KeshaRose https://t.co/AD8lbruTe7 https://t.co/mJMaYe36EX https://t.co/TWKhjqAm0p

You know they are actively and loudly supporting someone who covered up for Sexual Harassment and even bullied the victim into silence, right? https://t.co/uNRRfgCyZw

On the flip side, many defended Kesha, saying her experience with abusive contracts gives her insight on the situation:

Artists understand, Record labels exploit young talent with horrible contracts. If the artists want out for any reason, the company will make it impossible or ruin their careers. It’s a predatory model where artists make executives tons of money and sign away their lives. https://t.co/rZ0J0q4PbB
