Seungkwan of Seventeen Champions Sustainable Tourism in Jeju

Seventeen’s Seungkwan is lending his voice and energy to promote Jeju, his hometown, through a new public campaign focused on sustainable tourism. On July 17, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province dropped a promotional video for the “Promise with Jeju” initiative on YouTube. This campaign will be broadcast across TV, radio, and outdoor billboards in both Jeju and Seoul starting July 18.

Known for his love of Jeju and despite a packed schedule, Seungkwan made sure to take part, adding a spark of positivity to the project that highlights the island’s beautiful landscapes. A spokesperson for the campaign said,

"Despite his busy schedule, Seungkwan made time to participate. His bright energy added vibrancy to the beautiful scenery of Jeju."

The campaign aims to encourage responsible travel and promote a balance between tourism and preserving Jeju’s natural environment. Seungkwan shared his own feelings about being involved:

“I’m grateful and honored to help share the true beauty and value of Jeju with the world.”

He also expressed ongoing support for the cause:

“I will always support Jeju in its journey toward becoming a city where nature and tourism coexist in harmony.”

Seungkwan’s commitment to his hometown doesn’t stop there. Last month, he donated 20 million KRW (about $14,470 USD) to the Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Trust for Cultural Heritage to help protect Jeju’s cultural assets. This is just one example of his active involvement in charitable causes tied to Jeju.

Back in November 2023, following his appointment as a Jeju promotional ambassador, Seungkwan also contributed through the Jeju Provincial Office’s Hometown Love Donation Program. His support went toward safeguarding the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, a species recognized as internationally endangered.

Seungkwan’s dedication to Jeju was also apparent during the 13th UNESCO Youth Forum in 2023, where he brought attention to Jeju’s unique recognition as the first place in the world to earn UNESCO designation in three natural environment categories.

On a larger scale, Seventeen have been breaking ground as influencers beyond music. They were the first K-pop group to host an exclusive special session at that UNESCO forum last year and were appointed UNESCO’s first Youth Goodwill Ambassadors, continuing to push forward in their social contribution efforts.

This latest campaign with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province adds another layer to Seungkwan’s ongoing mission: sharing his passion for Jeju and helping the world see why the island is worth both loving and protecting.
