Hacker Arrested for Stealing 8.4 Billion KRW From BTS’s Jungkook

Jungkook is the latest victim in a massive hacking scandal stealing billions in KRW from top South Korean figures.

On August 22, Korean authorities nabbed a 34-year-old Chinese hacker, Mr. A, extradited from Bangkok. He led a syndicate operating across Thailand and beyond. The group hacked telecoms and finance platforms to steal personal data and cash from wealthy targets.

Jungkook’s security accounts were compromised shortly after his enlistment last year. The hackers swiped ₩8.40 billion KRW (~$6 million USD) in HYBE shares. They sold 500 shares worth ₩126 million KRW (~$90,000 USD) to a third party.

BIG HIT MUSIC froze the rest of the shares fast to stop more damage. Jungkook filed a civil lawsuit against the buyer. The Seoul Western District Court ruled the sale invalid, stating:

“Jungkook was a victim of identity theft.”

The stolen shares must be returned.

This hacking ring didn’t just target Jungkook. CEOs and chaebol chairmen were also hit. The crime is among the most sophisticated financial frauds in South Korea.

Mr. A was hunted worldwide by Interpol and Korean police. After intelligence he entered Thailand in April, Seoul requested emergency detention. Prosecutors flew to Thailand, and after four months of negotiation, they secured his extradition.

The Ministry of Justice and Seoul Metropolitan Police continue to pursue the ring and related suspects.

Stay tuned as this story develops.
