Kim Dongyoon, Spectrum member, died two months after debut at 20
Kim Dongyoon died on July 27, 2018 at the age of 20, two months after his official debut.
It has been eight years since the late Kim Dongyoon, formerly of the group Spectrum, passed away.
WYNN Entertainment announced the death on the group’s official fan cafe. The agency wrote:
“The sudden tragedy has left the bereaved family, Spectrum members, and all staff deeply saddened as they mourn the loss.”
The family held a quiet, private funeral per their wishes. An autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause of death, but no specific details were released.
Kim first gained attention in 2017 by appearing on JTBC’s survival audition program MIXNINE. He ranked 21st in the male category and built a solid fanbase.
In May 2018 he debuted as a member of the seven-member boy group Spectrum with the album Be Born and the title track “Light It Up.” At the debut showcase he said:
“I’ve improved a lot through MIXNINE. I want to study composing diligently to write great songs with the members and help promote our team widely.”
He stayed active with fans, hosting live broadcasts on his personal account up until the day before his death. His younger sister posted on her personal account asking for heartfelt final messages wishing him happiness in heaven.
Spectrum honored him by releasing the tribute song “Dear My” in September 2018, a track Kim Dongyoon had helped write. The group continued performing his parts and left his spot on stage empty as a sign of respect.
Due to worsening management conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Spectrum disbanded in July 2020, with members pursuing individual paths.
