Netflix K-Drama Inspired by Real-Life Suicide Case Sparks Debate

Kim Mu Yeol‘s new K-Drama Teach You A Lesson is facing heavy backlash for racism and sexism accusations. The controversy has led to the show being discontinued in the U.S. on Netflix.
The series, based on the webtoon Get Schooled, stars Kim Mu Yeol as Kim Hwa Jin, a government official sent to schools to tackle bullying and other issues. But Episode 5 sparked outrage for its depiction of a teacher’s suicide attempt following severe harassment by a student’s mother.
In the episode, Choi Ji Seon, a first-grade teacher, tries to take her own life at school after enduring endless harassment from parents and non-support from the principal. Kim Mu Yeol’s character steps in as a substitute teacher and eventually resolves the conflict.
The episode draws a clear parallel to the real 2023 Seoi Elementary School Case. A 24-year-old teacher was found dead by suicide after suffering harassment from parents. Unlike the drama, those parents faced no consequences, and nothing was done in time to save the teacher.
This comparison quickly went viral online with many pointing out the tragic real-life truth behind the episode.
